EXPLAINER: The Birth of an Independent Ukrainian Press: From Samvydav to Modern JournalismBefore Ukraine’s independence, uncensored journalistic ideas travelled through hidden networks of typed manuscripts, unofficial newspapers, and foreign radio broadcasts. Radio Liberty and a new generation of journalists then helped to loosen Soviet control, connect Ukraine’s regions and prepare the ground for a more modern independent press – one that emerged before 1991 and would soon face the hard tests of freedom.
